Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the tickerspy Ideas & Research Center?

A: The Ideas & Research area of tickerspy is a set of tools that allow members to dig deeper into all the data available on tickerspy. Members can use Ideas & Research to find top members and Pros and to discover which stocks are seeing notable activity among members and Pros. With the amount of data we've provided and the tools to organize and sort it, we expect tickerspy members will find many ways to use Ideas & Research.

The Ideas & Research area is comprised of five sections:

1) The Members section can be used to find top performing and "most tracked" tickerspy members. To use this area, click on the links in the Members area at the top or sort the columns in the area below. You can also type in a member name to find the stats for a specific member. Note: Ideas & Research displays only the initial public portfolio created by each member.

2) The Pros section can be used to find top performing and "most tracked" Pros. To use this area, click on the links in the Pros area at the top or sort the columns in the area below. You can also type in a Pro name to find the stats for a specific Pro.

A note on "all-time" Pro performance: To calculate this value, we combine all of the quarterly holdings reports for that Pro investor. The initial date used is the start date of the first quarterly holdings report we have in our database. Start dates vary based on the first quarterly holdings report we have for each Pro. Please see our Institutional Holdings Disclaimer for more on how we calculate Pro portfolio performance estimates. tickerspy is not affiliated with any of the Pro investors profiled on our web site.

3) The Stocks section offers a number of tools to gauge member and Pro activity in each stock. In the Stocks area at the top, enter a ticker or multiple tickers to see the stats for various stocks. You can also click on the links in the Stocks area at the top or sort the columns in the area below. You can also enter a market cap if you wish to further refine your results.

Below is a description of the various components of the Stocks section:

Change: This is the day's change for the stock. We have excluded pink sheet and bulletin board stocks from this sort, as well as stocks with a market cap of less than $50 million.

Member Holders: This is the number of members currently holding the stock in a portfolio.

Member Holders Rank: This is the stock's rank based on how many members hold it. The stock ranked number one is held by the most tickerspy members.

Most Added: We look at the recent net stock adds (people adding a stock to their portfolio minus people removing it) and compare this against the company's previous history to identify those companies that are seeing the largest changes on a relative basis. Without the company history comparison, our most followed companies would likely be near the top of the list at all times. A value greater than one indicates a greater than normal number of adds over the last seven days, and a value less than one indicates a less than normal number of adds. If no value is shown, there was not enough activity to generate a value.

Member Shorts: This is the number of members currently shorting the stock in a portfolio.

Member Shorts Rank: This is the stock's rank based on how many members are shorting it. The stock ranked number one has the highest number of members shorting it.

Most Shorted: We look at the recent net stock shorts (people shorting it in their portfolios minus people covering their short) and compare this against the company's previous history to identify those companies that are seeing the largest changes on a relative basis. A value less than -1 (for example -3.6) indicates a greater than normal number of shorts over the last seven days, and a value greater than -1 (for example -0.6) indicates a less than normal number of adds. If no value is shown, there was not enough activity to generate a value.

Pro Holders: This is the number of Pro investors holding the stock.

Pro Holders Rank: This is the stock's rank based on the number of Pros holding it.

Pro Holder Adds: This value is calculated by taking the number of Pros who added the stock as a new position in the current quarter, saw it enter their top-15 holdings, or increased shares in the current quarter's portfolio versus the prior quarter's portfolio. This value is updated once per quarter.

Pro Holder Removes: This value is calculated by taking the number of Pros who removed the stock entirely after holding it last quarter, saw it drop out of their top-15 holdings, or decreased shares in the current quarter's portfolio versus the prior quarter's portfolio.

Top Member: This is the member with the best period of performance holding the stock in question.
4) The Indexes section can be used to find top performing and "most tracked” Indexes, as well as Indexes ranked by yield and lowest P/E. As a reminder, an Index is a portfolio-like grouping of stocks around a theme. Some examples include Dry Bulk Shipping Stocks, Chinese Solar Stocks, and Canadian Energy Trusts.

Enter an Index ticker or a keyword into the Indexes search box to see the stats for various Indexes. You can also click on the links in the Indexes area at the top or sort the columns in the area below.

Below is a description of the various components of the Indexes section:
1-Day Change: This is the day's change for the Index.

1-Week Change: This is the week's change for the Index.

1-Month Change: This is the month's change for the Index.

All-Time Change: Unless otherwise indicated on the Index page, this percentage change dates back to January 1st, 2008, the start date for all tickerspy Indexes.

Institutional Holdings Disclaimer

Pro portfolios track the top 15 quarterly holdings of more than 1,400 institutions. Comments in Pro portfolios show the institution's change in shares held for each company quarter over quarter.

Pro portfolio performance is based on institutions' top 15 holdings as disclosed in quarter-end filings with the SEC. Pro performance does not take into account additional holdings beyond the top 15 nor does it include positions that are not required to be disclosed by the SEC. As such, Pro portfolio performance should be considered an approximation and not a precise record of how an institution has performed over time.
