Stock Pickers Winning Big in Battery Sector (VLNC, CRTP, CBAK, ZBB, AXPW, BYDDF, AONE)

There is no shortage of volatility in the energy storage segment, but prudent stock pickers can make big gains buying on the dips.

As of yesterday’s close, Valence Technologies (VLNC) was off by -10% over the last month – the worst performer in the energy storage sector. Investors who bought in on the pullback are up by 20% today after the company announced a $3.1 million order from the Tanfield Group, a U.K.-based producer of battery-powered vehicles.

Valence is one of nine Energy Storage and Battery Stocks Index components valued at less than $200 million. It takes a thick skin to endure volatility in the small- and micro-cap segment of the battery industry, but investors willing to stick it out through the dips have earned sizable gains over the last month.

China-based small-cap battery plays China Ritar Power (CRTP) and China BAK Battery (CBAK) are up by 30% and 22% respectively over the last month. Investors who bought in near the stocks’ 52-week highs are still recouping losses, but both have tripled since their lows over the last year.

Micro-cap ZBB Energy (ZBB) recently had its first major pullback since rocketing higher by over 40% from mid-December to early January. Axion Power International (OTC: AXPW) is down by -8% over the last month, but traders who bought on news of the $26 million common stock offering completion are up by double-digits.

Even the largest battery players, BYD (OTC: BYDDF) and A123 (AONE) are prone to their share of pops and drops. As the industry gains traction, and some of the major electric prototypes hit the streets, it will be interesting to see whether the energy storage segment can continue to push higher.
