Your Favorite Cleantech Stocks Just Got Cheaper (YGE, STP, FSLR, ESLR, GE, BWEN, PWR, APWR, TAN, PBW, ICLN, QCLN)In a down week for the broad market, alternative energy shares got hammered by as much as -15%. The high-flying alternative energy sector was a favorite among investors in 2009 as international governments used various “green” initiatives as a means to stimulate economic activity while reducing environmental impact. Barely into the New Year, the industry’s first notable correction sent shares plummeting by double-digit percentages. As a whole, the Solar Stocks Index has fallen by -9.5% over the last five sessions with Chinese players among the laggards. Yingli Green Energy (YGE) is off by -15% for the period after suffering a downgrade to “Reduce” from “Accumulate” at Ardour Capital. Meanwhile, an upgrade to “Neutral” from “Underperform” at Macquarie couldn’t help Suntech Power Holdings (STP) this week, as the stock slipped by -12%. Domestic giant First Solar (FSLR) also slipped by more than -10% over the last week, and Evergreen Solar (ESLR) wasn’t far behind. Eleven of thirteen Wind Energy Stocks Index components are in the red over the last five sessions. Reports that T. Boone Pickens slashed his order of General Electric (GE) turbines in half didn’t help sentiment, as Broadwind Energy (BWEN), Quanta Services (PWR), and A-Power Energy Generation Systems (APWR) all slipped by -10% or more. The Green ETFs Index was also painted in red this week, with the Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy Index ETF (TAN) leading the decline. The PowerShares Winderhill Clean Energy Portfolio (PBW), iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index ETF (ICLN), and First Trust Nasdaq Clean Edge Green Energy Index Fund (QCLN) were also off by more than -5%. It will be interesting to see whether the various segments of the clean energy sector can rebound following the three-day weekend. As of this writing, four “green” Indexes are among tickerspy’s ten worst performers over the last week.
