It's interesting to compare lines charting the indexes 1960-1982 to the movement of those lines after 1982. Did Reagan's deregulation set the country on the right course? Or did it lead us to a giddy, paperish precipice of peril and inevitable quagmire. Now the media is blaming Obama for the last month of market performance, speaking as though the economy and market (they're not the same) were all aglow through December! In the past year, I bought mutual funds that immediately lost 60-80% between June and September. The market is an entertaining hobby but if it requires in and out gunslingers, experts with margin and selling puts, triple inverse movement ETFs, etc. not to lose money, then I hope Obama has the nerve to hold his course and ignore the hot air of the Rushes, Seans, even Chris Matthews. The majority of the public, believe it or not, is frankly not obsessed with the market, despite the efforts of Cramer, Kudlow, and all of the other noise. As an educator, I become slightly ill whenever one of these types says we need to "educate" the public more about wealth, money, and the market. Sorry--that's not education! This is a slightly decadent activity which has replaced Vegas and the dog track for me. Doesn't change the fact that most of us would have been better off with our money in a savings account the last 15 years. Dennis Hopper was far more believable as a slacker than another money planner. (Moreover, he's wrong. Mutual funds smell. As long as stock transactions stay around ten bucks, it's hard to lose big money decent stocks simply by being nimble and taking small nibbles on a regular basis. It's when you put down a required big initial payment for a mutual fund--whether it's Ameriprise or Ken Heebner--that you really can get burned.

hello, i am curious why you added goldman though i do agree it was at an attractive price. do you see any potential bidders for the company and if so, would the bid be at any premium, or a fire sale price. also, what are your thoughts on the bailout package and do you think it'll change the long term prospects for GS?
